Missouri S&T research gives ‘brain’ to military robots

Robots are widely used in commercial applications and military and police operations around the world, but they lack visual perception and threat-recognition because they often operate solely on location sensors. Researchers at Missouri University of Science and Technology are using deep learning – a type of machine learning – to develop “leader-follower” robot swarms equipped with cameras that will allow them to visually perceive and learn, recognize threats and analyze options to keep humans safe from harm.

New environmental science degree approved for S&T

A new bachelor’s degree in environmental science will soon be offered at Missouri S&T. The Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education recently approved Missouri S&T’s proposal to create the new bachelor of science degree.

Winners announced in S&T’s 150th Anniversary Poetry and Writing Contest

Missouri S&T partnered with Arts Rolla, Southwinds, the Missouri S&T Writing Center and the Center for Arts and Innovation to host the competition for original written works.

Dr. Frank Liou named to the College of Fellows of SME

Dr. Frank Liou, the Michael and Joyce Bytnar Professor and director of manufacturing engineering at Missouri S&T, has been named to the College of Fellows of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and will be honored at the 2021 SME Fall Gala on Nov. 10.  The SME fellows honor was established in 1986 to recognize outstanding contributions to the social, technological and educational aspects of the manufacturing profession. Only those with 20 or more years of dedicated service can receive this honor.

American Society of Civil Engineers 2022 president to speak at S&T

Missouri University of Science and Technology crowned the 2021 Homecoming Queen and King at halftime of the Oct. 9 football game between S&T and Truman State University. Olivia Romisch, a sophomore in civil engineering, was named Missouri S&T’s 2021 Homecoming Queen. Blake Elder, a senior in civil engineering, was named Missouri S&T’s 2021 Homecoming King.
