Nobel scholar to share climate change solutions in 2021 Stueck Lecture at Missouri S&T
Dr. Don Wuebbles, professor emeritus of atmospheric science at the University of Illinois, calls climate change “the biggest challenge of our time.” Wuebbles, who shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), will discuss extreme weather events related to climate change and possible ways to slow and mitigate the challenge during the 2021 Stueck Lecture at Missouri S&T.

Engineering graduates enter the workforce with essential academic knowledge, technical skills and problem-solving ability. But employers say they need more than academic prowess and technical know-how. Soft skills like effective communications, leadership, networking, negotiating, conflict resolution and cultural aptitude play a critical role in employees’ success. Students at Missouri S&T are getting help in those areas from alumni mentors through a program housed in the Doshi Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (ChBE).

Dr. Kathryn Northcut, professor of English and technical communication, has been named vice provost of academic support at Missouri S&T, effective Thursday, Sept. 1. She has served as interim vice provost since February 2020. As vice provost of academic support, Northcut oversees the programs and services designed to support learning and improve retention and graduation rates.

Medical devices made of bioactive glasses and metals that dissolve at the end of their operational lifespan could replace other types of implants and eliminate the need for invasive removal once they have served their purpose, say researchers at Missouri S&T. The researchers recently received a patent for the device.

Eight students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) participated in a summer program at Missouri S&T that is designed to encourage engineering students from underrepresented groups to pursue graduate studies. This year, students in Missouri S&T’s Summer Engineering Research Academy (SERA) visited Rolla from Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama, Tennessee State University in Nashville and Morgan State University in Baltimore.

Missouri S&T researcher wins NSF CAREER Award for 2D metals research
As electronic devices get smaller and faster, computer chips must get thinner to save space and improve performance. Dr. Chenglin Wu, an assistant professor of structural engineering at Missouri S&T, has won a $500,000 CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation for his work in two-dimensional metals – metals that are three atoms thick – for use in computer chips, sensors and coatings.
