Dr. Frank Liou, the Michael and Joyce Bytnar Professor and director of manufacturing engineering at Missouri S&T, has been named to the College of Fellows of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and will be honored at the 2021 SME Fall Gala on Nov. 10. The SME fellows honor was established in 1986 to recognize outstanding contributions to the social, technological and educational aspects of the manufacturing profession. Only those with 20 or more years of dedicated service can receive this honor.
Dr. Ming Leu, the Keith and Pat Bailey Distinguished Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Missouri S&T, nominated Liou for the award.
“Frank Liou is most deserving to be recognized as an SME Fellow,” says Leu. “He is well known for his superb research in metal additive manufacturing, and his research team has successfully translated its hybrid manufacturing research into products commercialized by Siemens and DMG/MORI.”
Liou joined the Missouri S&T faculty in 1987. In addition to his work as the founding director of the manufacturing engineering program since 1999, he is interim director for the Intelligent Systems Center and a faculty research investigator for the Center for Aerospace Manufacturing Technologies, the Graduate Center for Materials Research, and the Center for Research in Energy and Environment at S&T.
In 2020, Liou received the SME’s Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal for his published research in hybrid additive manufacturing and advanced materials and the industrial impact of that research.
Liou has mentored over 30 Ph.D. students, 100 master’s degree students, and many undergraduates in their research and studies in manufacturing. He has served as an associate editor of the SME Journal of Manufacturing Systems and as a program and conference chair for several conferences hosted by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Society for Engineering Education. Liou has published a book on rapid prototyping and engineering applications, as well as 350 technical papers.
