Changing the game one hat at a time

“If one week of feeling horrible can give someone else even one enjoyable day out of the hospital, I would do it as often as possible.” That was the mentality of Ashley Allegri when she donated for “Be The Match,” a worldwide bone marrow transplantation network that provides support and resources for patients and donors. This past September, Allegri spent five hours in a hospital bed donating bone marrow to an anonymous recipient.

S&T’s Lusk on committee to help keep miners safe

A Missouri University of Science and Technology researcher is part of a national group looking at ways to keep miners — especially underground coal miners — safe.

Dr. Braden Lusk, professor and chair of mining and nuclear engineering at Missouri S&T, is on the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine committee to study occupational exposure to respirable coal mine dust in underground mines.

Missouri S&T mining expert helps write new rules

A mining expert from Missouri University of Science and Technology lent a hand in writing new Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) mining disclosure rules that could guide the industry for the next 20 to 30 years.

Dr. Kwame Awuah-Offei, associate professor of mining engineering at Missouri S&T, worked for the SEC from early February 2015 to mid-August 2016 in Washington, D.C., to craft guidelines on disclosures on mine property and payments by publicly traded mining companies. The current mining property disclosure rules have been in place for 30 years, and if accepted, the new ones — designed to bring the United States more in line with international standards — should last at least that long.
