Dunn-Norman champions exchange program
Do you want to visit distant lands, meet new and exciting people and, maybe, you know, ride an elephant?
Well, Missouri University of Science and Technology has just the thing for you. As part of Missouri S&T’s Study Abroad program, students can spend a semester in Southeast Asia as part of an exchange program with University Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), a STEM-focused university in Malaysia.
Dr. Shari Dunn-Norman, associate professor of geological and petroleum engineering at Missouri S&T, has lectured at UTP-Malaysia and champions the program — and she’s headed back to Malaysia in October. Her counterpart at UTP-Malaysia is Dr. Ismail bin Mohd Saaid, who studied at Missouri S&T the fall of 1991.
Read More »Yang named 2016 ONR Young Investigator for metasurfaces research
Dr. Xiaodong Yang, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, received the 2016 Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award for his optical metasurfaces research.
Yang’s work has applications in areas such as optical wireless communication, car acceleration sensors, cell phone displays, disease diagnostics and mechanical energy harvesting.
“The ONR YIP is one of the oldest and most selective scientific research advancement programs in the country,” according to the Office of Naval Research. “Its purpose is to fund early career academic researchers — called investigators — whose scientific pursuits show outstanding promise for supporting the Department of Defense while also promoting their professional development.”
Read More »Missouri S&T hosts GenCyber security camp for K-12 teachers
For the second consecutive year, an interactive summer workshop to promote cybersecurity awareness and educate Missouri K-12 teachers takes place next month at Missouri University of Science and Technology.
The “GenCyber” camp is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Security Agency (NSA). It’s part of an NSF/NSA program to educate K-12 teachers about the need for more cybersecurity experts, and Missouri S&T is the only university in the state to host the camp. There are 73 camps sponsored throughout the country this year after 43 in last year’s pilot program.

Faculty recognized for raising Missouri S&T’s visibility
Missouri University of Science and Technology Provost Robert Marley recently presented 16 faculty members with the Faculty External Award for their efforts to raise the university’s visibility nationally and internationally.
Read More »Bristow to lead Center for Aerospace Manufacturing Technologies
ROLLA, Mo. — Dr. Douglas Bristow, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been named the director of the Center for Aerospace Manufacturing Technologies (CAMT) at Missouri S&T. His appointment takes effect Thursday, May 19.
Bristow takes over for Dr. Ming Leu, the Keith and Pat Bailey Missouri Distinguished Professor of Integrated Product Manufacturing and director of the Intelligent Systems Center at Missouri S&T. Leu was CAMT’s director since its founding 12 years ago.

Missouri University of Science and Technology won the Southern Regional Mine Rescue Competition May 3-5 in New Iberia, Louisiana.
Missouri S&T’s Gold Team finished first overall after placing first in the smoke chamber, first aid and on the field and second place in team tech. The Missouri S&T Black Team finished ninth out of 16 teams.
The competition involves a simulated mine disaster that is set up and monitored by the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration. In addition to the rescue simulation, other events include first aid, gas testing and maintaining a complex self-contained breathing apparatus. Written exams are also administered.

ROLLA, Mo. — Batteries are everyday objects people don’t think about — until they run out of juice. That’s especially true the more ubiquitous an object is, such as laptop computers and cellphones that need to have their batteries charged seemingly every day.
But Missouri University of Science and Technology researchers are working to solve the problem of short-life of lithium-ion batteries like those used in laptops and cellphones, making them reliable and longer-lasting using a thin-film coating technique called atomic layer deposition (ALD). Their paper, titled “Employing Synergetic Effect of Doping and Thin-Film Coating to Boost the Performance of Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode Particles,” is being published today, Wednesday, May 4, in Scientific Reports, a Nature publishing group journal.

Missouri University of Science and Technology’s recent patent recipients were honored Wednesday, April 27, at the university’s second annual Inventor Celebration Day. Missouri S&T’s office of technology transfer and economic development (OTTED) hosted the campuswide event, which recognized nine S&T faculty who earned a patent in the past year.

Nine professionals with ties to Missouri University of Science and Technology were inducted into the Missouri S&T Academy of Civil Engineers at a dinner and induction ceremony held at Hasselmann Alumni House in Rolla, Missouri, on April 21.
The academy recognizes outstanding alumni for their professional achievement and success, and provides organized assistance to the civil engineering department at Missouri S&T.
