Dr. Joel Burken, Curators’ Professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been named a Fellow of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP).
He joins the fourth class of Fellows for the 53-year-old organization with members in academia and the profession of environmental engineering and science. The honor recognizes members who have served AEESP and the profession for at least 15 years. The individuals who receive the honor include members who have exhibited exceptional long-term excellence in environmental research, teaching, or service to the environmental engineering and science community.

Well, Missouri University of Science and Technology has just the thing for you. As part of Missouri S&T’s Study Abroad program, students can spend a semester in Southeast Asia as part of an exchange program with University Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), a STEM-focused university in Malaysia.
Dr. Shari Dunn-Norman, associate professor of geological and petroleum engineering at Missouri S&T, has lectured at UTP-Malaysia and champions the program — and she’s headed back to Malaysia in October. Her counterpart at UTP-Malaysia is Dr. Ismail bin Mohd Saaid, who studied at Missouri S&T the fall of 1991.
Read More »Dr. Xiaodong Yang, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, received the 2016 Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award for his optical metasurfaces research.
Yang’s work has applications in areas such as optical wireless communication, car acceleration sensors, cell phone displays, disease diagnostics and mechanical energy harvesting.
“The ONR YIP is one of the oldest and most selective scientific research advancement programs in the country,” according to the Office of Naval Research. “Its purpose is to fund early career academic researchers — called investigators — whose scientific pursuits show outstanding promise for supporting the Department of Defense while also promoting their professional development.”
