Growing up in northeast China, Dr. Guirong (Grace) Yan didn’t see many tornados in a country where the number of documented twisters is a fraction of those that hit the United States. Yet despite his many brushes with fame, what gets Mike Lusher most excited these days is his research into an unassuming desert shrub that some predict will revolutionize the rubber industry. A fascination with the guayule (why-YOO-lee) plant that began a dozen years ago while watching an episode of The History Channel show “Modern Marvels” has culminated in a Ph.D. in civil engineering for the 64-year-old grandfather, who received his diploma at May 12 commencement.

A longtime Missouri S&T professor has received the top teaching honor from a national civil engineering honor society. Dr. David Richardson, Chancellor’s Professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, received the James M. Robbins Excellence in Teaching Award from the Chi Epsilon national civil engineering honor society earlier this month.

Expert on risk management in engineering to give Stueck Lecture at Missouri S&T

A National Academy of Engineering member known for her work to highlight statistical rigor and mathematical probability in infrastructure design and risk management will present the 2018 Stueck Lecture at Missouri S&T later this month. Dr. Suzanne Lacasse, technical director of the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute and a member of the national engineering academies in the U.S., Canada, Norway and France, will discuss “Reality-based design for robust geotechnical practice” at 2:30 p.m., Friday, April 20, in Room 125 of Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Hall, 1401 N. Pine St. Lacasse plans to illustrate probabilistic and reliability-based design methods with case studies involving dam design, landslide runout, foundations of a historical ship museum and offshore installations.

Missouri S&T civil engineering professor named Fulbright distinguished chair in Australia

A Missouri S&T civil engineering professor will lecture and conduct research in Australia as a Fulbright scholar in advanced science and technology.
Dr. William Schonberg, professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, has been named a Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Advanced Science and Technology. His appointment begins in January 2019 at the Defence Science and Technology Group, a government agency in Melbourne.

University of Missouri Curators approve Advanced Construction and Materials Laboratory at Missouri S&T

The University of Missouri System Board of Curators on Thursday approved a new $6.5 million lab at Missouri University of Science and Technology that is expected to position the university as a national leader in addressing the challenges of aging public infrastructure. The Advanced Construction and Materials Laboratory (ACML) will expand the High-bay Structures Laboratory in Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Hall to provide 16,000 square feet of research space for developing and testing new construction materials and methods.
