“Getting more involved in satellites will take computer science into a whole new spectrum,” says Michael Carlson. He graduates Saturday with a bachelor’s degree in computer science and will also be commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Space Force, where he plans to specialize in cybersecurity.

From brain and heart surgeries to graduation

Creighton Miles has wanted to earn a master’s degree in explosives engineering from Missouri S&T since age 12. He was just a few credit hours from achieving his goal last December when he stayed home from work in Kansas City one day with a migraine. He later tried to get out of bed but couldn’t walk. Creighton’s bride of four months, Emily, notified Creighton’s parents and then called 911. The emergency room physician diagnosed Creighton with a brain bleed and ordered immediate surgery.

Riding the wave of nuclear fusion

Jack Fletcher, a senior in nuclear engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, plans to graduate in May and has already made his mark in the field. Fletcher, from St. Louis, spent the summer of 2021 working at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee as part of the U. S. Department of Energy’s Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program.
