MXene researchers find 2-D transition metal carbides react with water, opening a door to their unknown chemistry

Researchers at Missouri S&T have discovered that two-dimensional (2-D) titanium carbide materials, or MXenes, can react with water with no other oxidizers involved. Missouri S&T professor receives Thomas Fleming Award for Outstanding Military History Writing

McManus, Curators’ Distinguished Professor of history and political science at Missouri S&T and one of the nation’s most distinguished military historians, has won the Thomas Fleming Award for Outstanding Military History Writing for his upcoming journal article on Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s stealth campaign for the 1944 Republican presidential nomination. A $5,000 cash prize accompanies the award.

Fine Linen Theatre grows into Rolla fixture — with plenty of help from Missouri S&T community members

Sixteen years ago, Dr. Keith Nisbett and his wife, Kim, didn’t set out to create an entrenched artistic home for amateur actors across south-central Missouri. As homeschool parents, they simply wanted to provide eldest daughter Amy, then a teenager, with the opportunity to perform on stage.That first show — From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, an adaptation of a popular children’s book — quickly became a full-fledged production. And as the nonprofit theater has laid down roots in Rolla, it’s evolved from a Nisbett family affair into a full-fledged community theater, with a healthy dose of participation by Missouri S&T students, staff, other faculty members and the community.

Venerable vanguard of S&T chemistry to present Stoffer Lecture Oct. 8

Dr. William J. James, professor emeritus of chemistry, will share personal memories and compelling highlights of his 65-year academic career at Missouri S&T for the third annual Dr. James O. Stoffer Lecture to be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, in Room G-3 Schrenk Hall on the S&T campus. The lecture is free and open to the public. Following the lecture, a reception honoring James will be held in the commons area on the third floor of Schrenk Hall.

Chemistry undergraduate completes summer fellowship with gratitude and a published, peer-reviewed paper

Rachel Nixon, a junior in chemistry at Missouri S&T and recipient of the new Carey and Christine Bottom Endowed Scholarship in Undergraduate Chemistry Research, is thankful for the 10-week program she completed this summer. Working in Dr. Risheng Wang’s bionanotechnology lab eight hours a day, Nixon finished her peer-reviewed, published paper for a DNA-origami project already underway, then began a new project.

Biomaterials expert Convertine joins Missouri S&T

Dr. Anthony J. Convertine, a biomedical engineer whose research seeks to tap polymer science to unlock the next steps in advancing drug delivery systems, has been named a Roberta and G. Robert Couch Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Missouri S&T. Convertine joins S&T from the University of Washington, where he rose to the position of research associate professor of bioengineering after starting there as a senior postdoctoral fellow in 2006.
