S&T team places second in University Rover Challenge, best among U.S. teams
Missouri S&T’s Mars Rover Design Team, winners of the 2017 University Rover Challenge (URC) finished second among a field of 36 collegiate teams in this year’s competition, which was won by Czestochowa University of Technology. Missouri S&T had the top score among the 12 U.S. teams in the competition.

Rock-and-roll grandpa earns doctoral degree for research on using desert shrub as asphalt recycling agent
He’s driven the backroads with some of the biggest names in rock and roll, from Def Leppard and KISS to John Denver and the Eurythmics, hauling both gear and performers as a truck- and bus-driving roadie. Yet despite his many brushes with fame, what gets Mike Lusher most excited these days is his research into an unassuming desert shrub that some predict will revolutionize the rubber industry. A fascination with the guayule (why-YOO-lee) plant that began a dozen years ago while watching an episode of The History Channel show “Modern Marvels” has culminated in a Ph.D. in civil engineering for the 64-year-old grandfather, who received his diploma at May 12 commencement.

As a boy, Dr. Joseph Newkirk was fascinated by artwork that depicted a sleek, space-age future of flying cars and robotic servants – the stuff of TV shows like The Jetsons. Today, Newkirk is still fascinated by a space-age future. But the Missouri S&T professor of metallurgical engineering isn’t dreaming about George Jetson’s speedy spacecraft. Instead, he’s thinking about what future materials will be needed to transport people to Mars or make robots stronger.

Dr. Ming Leu, the Keith and Pat Bailey Missouri Professor of Integrated Product Manufacturing at Missouri S&T, is being honored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for his role in advancing manufacturing research. The professional society has named Leu, who also directs the Intelligent Systems Center at S&T, the winner of its 2018 Milton C. Shaw Manufacturing Research Medal. The award recognizes significant fundamental contributions to the science and technology of manufacturing processes.

Gaming research may unlock secrets of ‘flow’
As an undergraduate, Tejaswini Yelamanchili used to spend hours a day playing video games like Counter-Strike and Age of Empires. Time would speed by – hours seemed like minutes – as she focused on the process of gaming. Now a graduate student at Missouri S&T, she’s spending much of her time getting others into gaming as part of her research to better understand how the brain works when players are in the zone.

Gao wins teaching excellence award at Missouri S&T
Dr. Stephen Gao, professor of geology and geophysics at Missouri S&T, has won the 2018 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.
The award is presented annually to one faculty member at each institution of higher education in Missouri. This year’s recipients were honored at a reception in Jefferson City earlier this month. Gao’s nomination was considered by a campus committee of Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professors.

Missouri S&T contributed more than $404 million to the state’s economy during the fiscal year that ended last June, according to a new report released today (Tuesday, April 17) by the University of Missouri System.

Dr. David Richardson, Chancellor’s Professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, received the James M.
