Burken takes chair of civil, architectural and environmental engineering department

Dr. Joel Burken, Curators’ Distinguished Professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, is now the department’s chair after signing an agreement on Thursday July 14.

Burken had been the department’s interim chair since December after previously serving as the department’s associate chair. Although his title has changed, he says he’ll still be involved in research and teaching.

Elmore named an ASCE Fellow

Dr. Curt Elmore, professor of geological engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been named an American Society of Civil Engineers Fellow.

Elmore has spent the last 30 years in the water resources and environmental engineering field. Before joining the Missouri S&T faculty in 2001, he was a consulting engineer specializing in remedial design at large formerly used defense Superfund sites.

Bartels travels west on ‘Grand Challenge’ topic with EPA

There are few places that have better summers than the United States’ Pacific Northwest. Mild temperatures, clear days, low humidity — and no rain.

Missouri University of Science and Technology student Katherine Bartels, a senior in environmental engineering from Independence, Missouri, is experiencing this year’s Pacific Northwest summer through an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Fellowship. Bartels is working out of Newport, Oregon, studying salt marshes’ ability to remove nitrogen from the ecosystem.

S&T doctoral student wins ACI fellowship

Iman Mehdipour, a graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in civil engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, was awarded the 2016-17 American Concrete Institute (ACI) Charles Pankow Student Fellowship.

As part of the award, Mehdipour will receive an educational stipend for tuition, residence, books, materials and paid travel to the next two ACI conventions. Fellowships are offered to high-potential and outstanding graduate students whose research studies relate to concrete engineering and are identified by ACI member faculty.

Burken elevated to Fellow by environmental engineering and science professors

Dr. Joel Burken, Curators’ Professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been named a Fellow of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP).

He joins the fourth class of Fellows for the 53-year-old organization with members in academia and the profession of environmental engineering and science. The honor recognizes members who have served AEESP and the profession for at least 15 years. The individuals who receive the honor include members who have exhibited exceptional long-term excellence in environmental research, teaching, or service to the environmental engineering and science community.

Professor honored for water work in Guatemala

A Missouri University of Science and Technology professor won the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AAEES) 2016 Superior Achievement Award during its annual Excellence in Environmental Engineering & Science (E3S) competition.

Dr. Daniel Oerther, the John A. and Susan Mathes Professor of Environmental Engineering at Missouri S&T, won for a project that developed an innovative and affordable approach to providing fresh water to rural villages in Guatemala.
