A total of 67 current and former faculty of Missouri S&T are among the top researchers in their field as measured by their career research records, and 54 current or former Missouri S&T researchers were among the best in their fields in 2023, according to a recent analysis of standardized citation indicators of the Elsevier Data Repository published by Stanford University. Of the 78 researchers affiliated with S&T on the list, 49 are active employees.

The Stanford study published Sept. 16 analyzes citations, h-index, and other metrics of research productivity and impact including a composite indicator (c-score). The analysis provides listings of top-scientists based on career-long and single-year impact.

Those in the top 2% with an S&T affiliation include 21 Curators’ Distinguished Professors, three fellows of the National Academy of Inventors, one member of the National Academy of Engineering, and two fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

“I continue to be impressed by the productivity and impact of our researchers,” says Dr. Kamal Khayat, vice chancellor for research and innovation at Missouri S&T. “The number of individuals who are in the top 2% most-cited ranking far exceeds 2% of our total faculty. This underscores the exceptional caliber of faculty engaged in cutting-edge research and impactful work.”

The study categorizes research into the following 20 fields: agriculture, fisheries and forestry; biology; biomedical research; built environment and design; chemistry; clinical medicine; communication and textual studies; earth and environmental sciences; economics and business; enabling and strategic technologies; engineering; historical studies; information and communication technologies; mathematics and statistics; philosophy and theology; physics and astronomy; psychology and cognitive sciences; public health and health services; social sciences; and visual and performing arts.

S&T researchers included in the study are as follows, listed under academic department. “Career” denotes those recognized for their career-long impact in their fields, “2023” denotes those recognized for their single-year research productivity for 2023, and “both” denotes individuals recognized for both their career-long impact and research productivity for 2023.
