Two S&T students earn new biomedical research awards

Ta-Chun Lin and Stephen Owusu have earned the inaugural Shi/Ma Award for Excellence in Biomedical Research at Missouri S&T. The winners are granted a $1,000 award in recognition of their contributions to the field of biomedical research.

A total of 58 current and former faculty of Missouri S&T are among the top researchers in their field as measured by their career research records, and 72 current or former Missouri S&T researchers were among the best in their fields in 2022, according to a recent analysis of standardized citation indicators of the Elsevier Data Repository published by Stanford University.

S&T technique to detect breast cancer moving from lab to commercialization

Cancer screening could soon be as simple as giving a urine sample using a patented device developed by a Missouri University of Science and Technology researcher. This week, Wyoming-based Cancer.im Inc., a Viratech Corp. company (Symbol: VIRA) and social network for cancer patients, survivors and caretakers, announced an agreement with Missouri S&T to commercialize the device.

A Missouri University of Science and Technology researcher has developed a new screening method that uses urinalysis to diagnose breast cancer – and determine its severity – before it could be detected with a mammogram. A study to confirm this technique’s effectiveness is under way at Mercy Breast Center in Springfield, Mo.
