Engineering a rescue
The night Brian Hunt died, volunteer firefighter Cody McKellips vowed to find a better way for fire and rescue teams to speed up water rescues, particularly as flood waters rise.
McKellips, a junior in aerospace engineering at Missouri S&T, was working with the Walnut Grove Volunteer Fire Department when storms caused massive flooding in the Springfield, Missouri, area. Hunt became the 14th victim of the flood when his truck was swept off of a Route H bridge into the Pomme de Terre River the day after Christmas in 2016.

Portland cement has been around for more than 250 years as the binding material for concrete, mortar and stucco, but a Missouri University of Science and Technology researcher is studying ways to make concrete without the traditional material.
Dr. Mohamed ElGawady, associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at Missouri S&T, is testing mixtures of concrete made with fly ash that can be more durable, strong and resilient than concrete using ordinary Portland cement (OPC).

Missouri University of Science and Technology, in partnership with the University of Louisville and Indiana University, will be helping women and minority faculty, staff and student innovators improve their success in securing money to commercialize their inventions.
The National Science Foundation has awarded a $225,000 grant for a pilot program, called AWARE: ACCESS: Building Innovation Capacity through Diversity. The University of Louisville is the lead institution for the grant.

The St. Pat’s Celebration Committee at Missouri University of Science and Technology has announced Bob Edwards as Honorary St. Pat and parade marshal for the 109th St. Pat’s celebration. The committee also announced the 2017 list of Honorary Knights of St. Patrick. The eight Honorary Knights are Dr. Susan Bowles, Walt Branson, Alisa Green, Dr. Barbara Hale, Oscar Kemp, Dr. Ashok Midha, Dr. Melanie Mormile and Dr. David Russell.
