Dr. Stewart Gillies, interim director of the Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center at Missouri University of Science and Technology since 2009, has been named director of the center, effective Jan. 1, 2013.
The internationally renowned St. Louis Symphony will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, in Leach Theatre of Castleman Hall, 10th and Main streets in Rolla.
Dr. Xiaoqing (Frank) Liu, professor of computer science at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been named interim chair of the Missouri S&T computer science department. The position takes effect Jan. 1, 2013. Dr. Jennifer Leopold, associate professor of computer science, will serve as interim graduate coordinator.

Smaller ant colonies tend to live faster, die younger and burn up more energy than their larger counterparts, as do the individual ants that make up those colonies, according to new research that views the colonies as “superorganisms” in which social insects function much like the cells of a body.
An undergraduate student at Missouri University of Science and Technology has received national recognition for his research on a process for creating rare-earth phosphates. The process could be used to develop materials for optical sensors and diode lighting applications, such as LED (light-emitting diode) lighting.
