Chemistry undergraduate completes summer fellowship with gratitude and a published, peer-reviewed paper

Rachel Nixon, a junior in chemistry at Missouri S&T and recipient of the new Carey and Christine Bottom Endowed Scholarship in Undergraduate Chemistry Research, is thankful for the 10-week program she completed this summer. Working in Dr. Risheng Wang’s bionanotechnology lab eight hours a day, Nixon finished her peer-reviewed, published paper for a DNA-origami project already underway, then began a new project.

Biomaterials expert Convertine joins Missouri S&T

Dr. Anthony J. Convertine, a biomedical engineer whose research seeks to tap polymer science to unlock the next steps in advancing drug delivery systems, has been named a Roberta and G. Robert Couch Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Missouri S&T. Convertine joins S&T from the University of Washington, where he rose to the position of research associate professor of bioengineering after starting there as a senior postdoctoral fellow in 2006.

Magic-themed MinerRama offers students ways to get involved

The Missouri S&T community will welcome new and returning students during its ninth annual MinerRama. Hosted by the student involvement department, the event kicks off at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at the Puck and runs until 2 p.m. Wizards and muggles alike are welcome at MinerRama, which features the Harry Potter-inspired theme of “find the magic of getting involved.”

Hilmas named chair of materials science and engineering at Missouri S&T

Dr. Gregory E. Hilmas, a ceramic engineer and leading expert in methods to create more durable, next-generation materials, has been named chair of materials science and engineering at Missouri S&T.
The Curators’ Distinguished Professor of ceramic engineering has served as interim department chair since July 2017. He succeeds Dr. Matthew J. O’Keefe, executive director of the Haley Barbour Center for Manufacturing Excellence at the University of Mississippi
