Missouri S&T awarded $1.45 million grant for energy research

The power plant of the future could be smaller, highly efficient and even portable, and researchers at Missouri S&T could play a key role in making this transformation happen.

Missouri S&T recently received a $1.45 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) to develop more efficient heat exchangers for energy production. Heat exchangers are devices used to transfer heat between two or more fluids and are commonly used in systems such as chemical plants, petroleum refineries, and refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.

A conversation with international students

They leave their families and home countries and travel long hours to arrive in the small town of Rolla, Missouri, to attend Missouri S&T. Once here, international students face challenges unfamiliar to most native-born U.S. citizens: language barriers, housing, making new connections, and adjusting to different food, weather and customs.

But with support from their fellow international students, their new community and Missouri S&T, many of them overcome each of these challenges, build new networks of friends and succeed academically.

Missouri S&T disc golf team places fourth in national championship

UPDATE: Over spring break, the Missouri S&T Miner Disc Golf Team placed fourth out of 36 teams at the National Collegiate Disc Golf Championship in Georgia. Team member Mark Anderson finished No. 1 overall as the individual national champion.

PREVIOUS STORY: Members of Missouri S&T’s disc golf team are headed to Georgia over spring break to compete in the National Collegiate Disc Golf Championship.

The Miner Disc Golf Club will take three teams and 12 players to the event in Appling, Georgia, March 27-30.

Missouri S&T secures $2 million contract to develop engineering program in Kuwait

Missouri S&T faculty will help a university in Kuwait develop its own undergraduate engineering program through a nearly $2 million contract.

The Gulf University of Science and Technology (GUST), a private university near Kuwait City on the Persian Gulf, signed a $1.9 million, five-year agreement with Missouri S&T to establish new engineering programs and monitor the programs’ quality.

Missouri S&T selects 2019 St. Pat and court

Peter Doran, a senior in engineering management at Missouri S&T, will portray St. Patrick during the 111th celebration of St. Pat’s in Rolla. Doran is from Kansas City, Missouri. St. Pat and his court will officially arrive in downtown Rolla at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, March 13. Following a procession through downtown, the court will preside over follies at the pavilion on 9th and Oak streets near the railroad tracks.

Project Lead The Way selects Missouri S&T to provide teacher training in Midwest

Project Lead The Way (PLTW), a national program designed to encourage interest in engineering and science among pre-college students, has selected Missouri S&T as one of only 17 training partners across the nation to provide PLTW professional development for preschool through high school teachers. Registration for the summer training sessions begins on March 5, 2019.
