Sixty-five current and former faculty of Missouri University of Science and Technology are among the top researchers in their field as measured by their career research records, and 12 other current or former Missouri S&T researchers were among the best in their fields in 2021, according to a recent analysis by Stanford University.
The Stanford study, published Oct. 10, analyzes the number of research publications, citations and other measures of research productivity, including career-long and single-year impact. The study classifies individuals into 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields that include science, engineering, business and medicine. Career-long data are updated through the end of 2021, and the selection is based on the top 100,000 researchers as determined by a composite citation metric known as a “c-score” (with and without self-citations) or by their percentile rank of 2% or above.
“We could not be prouder of our world-class researchers,” says Dr. Kamal Khayat, interim vice chancellor for research and innovation. “These rankings demonstrate quantitatively that Missouri S&T is home to many leading researchers across a wide range of academic departments. Not only does their work impact their fields and society at large but it also elevates the university’s reputation and moves us closer to the Carnegie R1 classification, one of our aspirations. We applaud these outstanding researchers.”
The Carnegie R1 classification is part of a framework developed by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education to indicate universities that conduct a “very high” level of research. Missouri S&T is currently classified as an R2 (“high” research level) university.
Those in the top 2% with an S&T affiliation include 19 Curators’ Distinguished Professors, two members of the National Academy of Inventors, one member of the National Academy of Engineering, and nine current or former directors of Missouri S&T research centers.
S&T researchers included in the study are as follows, by discipline. Those recognized for their career-long impact in their fields are marked with an asterisk (*). Many of those individuals also were recognized for their single-year research productivity for 2021.
