S&T’s College of Engineering and Computing honors high-achieving Ph.D. students

Eight Ph.D. students at Missouri University of Science and Technology were awarded dean’s honors from the university’s College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) during a May 11 ceremony at the Havener Center.

Two of the students received the Dean’s Graduate Educator Award in recognition of excellence in teaching, and six were honored with the Dean’s Ph.D. Scholar Award, which recognizes research contributions to the college.

‘It’s all about the students’: S&T professor wins medal from AASP – The Palynological Society

A geology and geophysics professor at Missouri S&T joined an elite group, as she became the seventh person selected to win the Medal for Excellence in Education from the AASP – The Palynological Society since the award was launched in 1999.

“I feel honored to be recognized with this medal, as it is a testament to the students I have been privileged to mentor,” says Dr. Francisca Oboh-Ikuenobe, professor of geology and geophysics and associate dean for academic affairs in the S&T College of Engineering and Computing. “This award is really all about my students. It would not have been possible without them.”

Cleared for takeoff: Weber’s flight path includes two S&T degrees, position with Boeing

For Joseph Weber, the aviation industry is a family business.

Weber, of St. Louis, finished a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in December 2022 from Missouri S&T, and he will finish his MBA from S&T in the coming days.

Right after graduation, he will start working for Boeing as a systems engineer in a position he’s had lined up since November of last year.

More than 1,000 Missouri S&T graduates will be awarded degrees during three upcoming commencement ceremonies. Dr. Oscar Barton will speak at the May 12 ceremony for Ph.D. graduates. Susan M. Simmons will speak at both May 13 ceremonies.

‘MacGyver’ Miner: From maintenance worker to middle school math teacher to mechanical engineer

In 2004, Chad Abernathy graduated from high school in Newtown, Missouri, and began his collegiate studies at Missouri S&T. Not long after, he started working as a part-time maintenance worker for S&T’s student affairs and auxiliary services.

Four years later, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences and earned magna cum laude honors.

Fast-forward another 15 years, and Abernathy is now in the final days of his second bachelor’s degree from S&T, and this time, it is in mechanical engineering.

Missouri S&T’s Engineers Without Borders to visit South America for first time since pandemic

Missouri S&T’s Engineers Without Borders team will soon be on the move and traveling to both Bolivia and Ecuador in May.

“These will be our team’s first international trips since before the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Anna Stephenson, a senior in chemical engineering who is the team’s project lead for the trip to Atahuallani, Bolivia. “It’s something we are all excited about. Our group has volunteered for our projects remotely, and now we will have the opportunity to be in the field.”

Time-traveling concrete: S&T researcher looks to ancient Rome to transform modern industry

Dr. Monday Uchenna Okoronkwo, assistant professor of chemical and biochemical engineering at S&T, is researching how to mimic the chemistry and composition of ancient Roman concrete while also applying modern technology to make it even better.
