Missouri S&T offers Six Sigma certification exam

Missouri University of Science and Technology’s engineering management systems engineering program (EMSE) department has been approved as a Quality Training Provider (QTP) by the Institute of Industrial Engineers, allowing students to test for Six Sigma Green Belt certification.

Six Sigma is focused on reducing variation in processes, products and services, says Dr. Elizabeth Cudney, associate professor of engineering management systems engineering at Missouri S&T and director of the Design Engineering Center. Although it started in the 1980s in manufacturing, it is widely used in healthcare, pharmaceuticals and service industries. With a focus on improving processes, it can be used in any industry.

Sneed named American Concrete Institute Fellow

Dr. Lesley H. Sneed, associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been named a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

Fellow status is granted to ACI members who have made outstanding contributions to the production or use of concrete materials, products and structures in the areas of education, research, development, design, construction or management. In addition, Fellows have made significant contributions to ACI through committees or local chapters.

Missouri S&T professor named AIChE Fellow

Dr. Muthanna H. Al-Dahhan, chair and professor of chemical and biochemical engineering and a professor of nuclear engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been elected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the highest grade of membership.

The award was presented in November during AIChE’s annual meeting in Salt Lake City.

The honor reaffirms the esteem with which Al-Dahhan’s colleagues and peers view his distinctive professional achievements and accomplishments. Al-Dahhan has been a consultant to many U.S. and international companies and research centers, and he founded and chaired international conferences on gas-liquid-solid reactor engineering, bio-energy and catalysis in renewable products.

Missouri S&T partners with industry to grow ceramic engineering

Ceramic engineers help make everything from the casserole dish in the cupboard to artificial joints for hip replacement to coatings that protect jet engine blades — but there aren’t enough ceramic engineers to meet industry needs, says a Missouri University of Science and Technology professor.

Missouri S&T is working to change that.

Missouri S&T is one of five colleges to take part in the Ceramic and Glass Industry Foundation’s (CGIF) University-Industry Network. The CGIF is an outgrowth of the American Ceramic Society (ACS). Dr. Richard Brow, Curators’ Professor of ceramic engineering at Missouri S&T, served as ACS’s president in 2012-13.

Missouri S&T researcher’s new book is a reflective look at moral development

Jonathan Finch, a lecturer in philosophy at Missouri S&T, recently published “A Crisis of Belief, Ethics and Faith.” The book was published by the University Press of America.
