S&T researcher tests fly ash for stronger concrete
Portland cement has been around for more than 250 years as the binding material for concrete, mortar and stucco, but a Missouri University of Science and Technology researcher is studying ways to make concrete without the traditional material.
Dr. Mohamed ElGawady, associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at Missouri S&T, is testing mixtures of concrete made with fly ash that can be more durable, strong and resilient than concrete using ordinary Portland cement (OPC).

‘Mr. S&T’ hangs up his slide rule
No matter whether you call it the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, the University of Missouri-Rolla or Missouri University of Science and Technology, Jerry Bayless has called it home.
Bayless, an associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at Missouri S&T, first came to the campus in 1955. He earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering in 1959 — the same year he joined the faculty — and added a master’s degree in civil engineering in 1962.

The SAB is made up of experts from across the country, in areas such as epidemiology, public health, medical research, biology and other fields related to protecting human health and the environment.

‘The Future of Computing’ to be explored in seminar
Learn about the future of computing and its scientific, technical and social effects on a global society at a lecture on the Missouri University of Science and Technology campus this month.
Dr. Daniel A. Reed, a 1978 Missouri S&T computer science graduate and vice president for research and economic development at the University of Iowa, will present the lecture as part of the computer science department’s 50th anniversary Distinguished Seminar Series. The lecture, titled “The Future of Computing,” will be presented at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 in Room 104 Centennial Hall on the Missouri S&T campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Missouri S&T to host Transportation Infrastructure Conference
Missouri University of Science and Technology, together with the Missouri Department of Transportation, will host the fifth annual Transportation Infrastructure Conference on Friday, Nov. 18, at the Havener Center on the Missouri S&T campus.
