Moats named chair of materials science and engineering

Dr. Michael Moats, professor of materials science and engineering (MSE) at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has accepted the role of MSE chair effective August 1. Moats has served as interim MSE chair since July 12, 2021.

Moats joined Missouri S&T’s faculty in 2012 and has served as director of the Thomas O’Keefe Institute. The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration awarded Moats its James Douglas Gold Medal in 2018. Prior to joining S&T, Moats was on faculty at the University of Utah from 2005-2012. Earlier in his career, he worked in private industry at ARMCO Grinding Systems in Kansas City, Missouri and ELTECH Systems Corp. in Ohio.

Moats is a Rolla High School graduate who earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in metallurgical engineering from Missouri S&T. He holds a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from the University of Arizona.
