A group of Missouri S&T students and faculty were recognized at the 2015 Region 5 Annual Conference of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which was held in late April.

Dr. Kelvin T. Erickson, professor of electrical and computer engineering, received the Outstanding Educator Award and Dr. Yiyu Shi, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, received an Outstanding Individual Achievement Award.

Justin Hoyt, a senior in electrical engineering from New Haven, Missouri, won second place in the Region 5 Student Papers Competition for his undergraduate research. Dr. Y. Rosa Zheng, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, is his supervising faculty member.

Kyle Harper, a senior in electrical engineering from Fenton, Missouri, and Kyle A. Gassel, a senior in electrical engineering from Novi, Michigan, placed first in the Region 5 Circuit Design Competition, which requires students to design and build a circuit in a limited time.

The student team comprised of Steven Enke, a senior in computer engineering from St. Peters, Missouri; Trevor McCasland, a senior in computer engineering from Gurnee, Illinois; Valentin Frommherz, a freshman in undergraduate studies from Kirchheim unter Tech, Germany; Noah George, a sophomore in computer engineering from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Brendan Wright, a junior in electrical engineering from Saint Louis, participated in the Region 5 Robotics Competition.

Leann Krieger, a senior in electrical engineering from Pevely, Missouri, and Andrew Castillo, a junior in electrical engineering from Kansas City, Missouri, represented the IEEE student branch at the meeting.

Devin Cornell, a senior in electrical engineering from Leon, Iowa, and Dr. Steve E. Watkins, professor of electrical and computer engineering, coordinated events as part of the IEEE Region 5 Executive Committee.

Region 5 includes Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas, as well as parts of other surrounding states. This year’s Region 5 conference was held in New Orleans.
