Analyzing past earthquakes may be key to predicting future activity

With the recent earthquakes in early July in southern California, one being a 6.4 magnitude and another a 7.1 magnitude, it is more important than ever to be able to accurately predict when and where the next one will occur. A researcher at Missouri S&T is working to do just that by studying past seismic waves produced by earthquakes.

Missouri S&T earthquake expert to speak at St. Louis event

Hasselmann Chair in geological engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, will discuss detailed studies of downtown St. Louis and make recommendations for new building codes during an event to promote earthquake awareness on Friday, Feb. 1, at the Data Center Auditorium in St. Louis.

UMR researchers hope to use quakes to unlock secrets about Earth’s crust

That network has also proven to be a crucial source of information for geologists and geophysicists like Drs.
