S&T students offered Black Belt certification

It’s all about making them more attractive to industry.

Students in Missouri University of Science and Technology’s engineering management and systems engineering (EMSE) department have the chance to earn Six Sigma Green Belt and Six Sigma Black Belt certification. The certifications are indicators of expertise in process improvement. Missouri S&T is the first university selected by the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) to offer Black Belt certification.

Suzanna Long is Missouri S&T’s 2016 Woman of the Year

Dr. Suzanna Long, interim chair and associate professor of engineering management and systems engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been named the 2016 Woman of the Year by Missouri S&T. She was honored during a campus ceremony on Wednesday, April 20.

The Woman of the Year award is given annually in recognition of efforts to improve the campus environment for women and minorities. As part of the award, Long received a $2,000 stipend funded by Missouri S&T graduate Cynthia Tang, founder and former chair of Insight Industries Inc.

Three S&T students selected for UM System entrepreneurship program

Missouri S&T offers Six Sigma certification exam

Missouri University of Science and Technology’s engineering management systems engineering program (EMSE) department has been approved as a Quality Training Provider (QTP) by the Institute of Industrial Engineers, allowing students to test for Six Sigma Green Belt certification.

Six Sigma is focused on reducing variation in processes, products and services, says Dr. Elizabeth Cudney, associate professor of engineering management systems engineering at Missouri S&T and director of the Design Engineering Center. Although it started in the 1980s in manufacturing, it is widely used in healthcare, pharmaceuticals and service industries. With a focus on improving processes, it can be used in any industry.

41 S&T faculty members honored for outstanding teaching

Forty-one Missouri University of Science and Technology faculty members will receive the Outstanding Teaching Award for 2014-2015. The winners will be recognized at a ceremony scheduled t 1:30 p.m. p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, in St. Pat’s Ballroom A of the Havener Center. The Outstanding Teaching Award is given each year to faculty members by the Outstanding Teaching Award Committee, which bases its selections on student evaluations.

Long named ASEM Fellow

Dr. Suzanna Long, interim chair and associate professor of engineering management and systems engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been named an American Society of Engineering Management Fellow, the society’s highest honor.

Candidates must have a minimum of eight years of continuous membership in ASEM with significant achievement in the field of engineering management in addition to distinguished service and contributions to the society.

Missouri S&T kicks off Sarchet seminar series

In advance of its 50th anniversary in fall 2016, the engineering management and systems engineering department at Missouri University of Science and Technology is launching the Bernie Sarchet Graduate Seminar Series.

The series is named after Dr. Bernie Sarchet, who joined Missouri S&T in the mid-1960s as the founding chair of the engineering management department.
