S&T doctoral student wins ACI fellowship

Iman Mehdipour, a graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in civil engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, was awarded the 2016-17 American Concrete Institute (ACI) Charles Pankow Student Fellowship.

As part of the award, Mehdipour will receive an educational stipend for tuition, residence, books, materials and paid travel to the next two ACI conventions. Fellowships are offered to high-potential and outstanding graduate students whose research studies relate to concrete engineering and are identified by ACI member faculty.

Rogers named an ASCE Fellow

Dr. J. David Rogers, the Karl F. Hasselmann Missouri Chair in Geological Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been named an American Society of Civil Engineers Fellow.

Rogers is an expert in the geoforensics of dam, levee and slope stability failures, flood control and fluvial geomorphology, the Mississippi Delta, and site characterization for seismic site response. He has written articles and prepared posted lectures on the evolution of flood control practice, dam and levee failures, landslide dams, Hoover Dam, the Panama Canal and the Tennessee Valley Authority, among many others.

ASM awards Missouri S&T toolkit licenses

Undergraduate materials science and engineering students at Missouri University of Science and Technology will gain design skills they can use for research in industry or federally funded projects thanks to the American Society for Metals (ASM) Materials Genome Toolkit.

Missouri S&T was one of three colleges this year to receive the kit. Each of the selected undergraduate engineering programs received materials design software and database packages in the Materials Genome Toolkit consisting of a three-year, multi-user license to a package of from Thermo-Calc Software. The software contains 99 seat licenses that will be installed in the Materials Science Computer Learning Center and on faculty computers, where requested, for teaching purposes.

Maerz takes over rock mechanics and explosives center

Dr. Norbert Maerz, professor of geological and petroleum engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been named the director of Missouri S&T’s Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center. His appointment took effect Monday, May 9.

He takes over for Dr. Stewart Gillies, professor of mining and nuclear engineering at Missouri S&T.

Dunn-Norman champions exchange program

Do you want to visit distant lands, meet new and exciting people and, maybe, you know, ride an elephant?

Well, Missouri University of Science and Technology has just the thing for you. As part of Missouri S&T’s Study Abroad program, students can spend a semester in Southeast Asia as part of an exchange program with University Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), a STEM-focused university in Malaysia.

Dr. Shari Dunn-Norman, associate professor of geological and petroleum engineering at Missouri S&T, has lectured at UTP-Malaysia and champions the program — and she’s headed back to Malaysia in October. Her counterpart at UTP-Malaysia is Dr. Ismail bin Mohd Saaid, who studied at Missouri S&T the fall of 1991.

Yang named 2016 ONR Young Investigator for metasurfaces research

Dr. Xiaodong Yang, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, received the 2016 Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award for his optical metasurfaces research.

Yang’s work has applications in areas such as optical wireless communication, car acceleration sensors, cell phone displays, disease diagnostics and mechanical energy harvesting.

“The ONR YIP is one of the oldest and most selective scientific research advancement programs in the country,” according to the Office of Naval Research. “Its purpose is to fund early career academic researchers — called investigators — whose scientific pursuits show outstanding promise for supporting the Department of Defense while also promoting their professional development.”
