Passing of former S&T chancellor John F. Carney III

Dr. John F. “Jack” Carney III, former chancellor of Missouri University of Science and Technology, died Wednesday, April 24, at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was 77.

Carney’s appointment as chancellor at Missouri S&T began on Sept. 1, 2005. He retired on Aug. 31, 2011.

“Our entire university family is saddened by Jack’s passing, and we extend our sincere condolences to Jack’s family,” says Dr. Christopher G. Maples, Missouri S&T interim chancellor. “His warmth of character and strength as a leader who loved this university will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He leaves a lasting legacy at a university he helped to transform in many positive ways.”

S&T announces Undergraduate Research Conference winners

Twenty seven students in eight categories received recognition and cash awards as winners of the 15th annual Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T. The conference featured oral and poster exhibitions that represented work from students in nearly every major at Missouri S&T. First-place winners were awarded a cash prize of $500. Second- and third-place finishers received $250 and $100, respectively.

Beth Kania-Gosche named chair of teacher education and certification at Missouri S&T

Missouri S&T grad helps capture first-ever image of a black hole

For the first time ever, scientists have captured an image of a black hole, and a Missouri S&T graduate played an important role. Dr. Frederick K. Baganoff, a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research, is among the collaborators on the international Event Horizon Telescope project to produce the first direct images of a black hole. Baganoff earned a bachelor of science degree in physics from Missouri S&T in 1985.
