Dr. Amy Belfi, associate professor of psychological science at Missouri S&T, has been named a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science (APS).
According to the APS, Fellow status is awarded to members who have made sustained outstanding contributions to the science of psychology in research, teaching, service, or application. Fellow status is typically awarded for scientific contributions but may also be awarded for exceptional contributions to the field through the development of research opportunities and settings.
Belfi’s research covers a broad range of topics in the field of music cognition, including music and autobiographical memory, musical imagery, aesthetic judgments of music, and musical anhedonia. She uses a variety of techniques to investigate these subjects, including behavioral studies, functional neuroimaging, psychophysiology and neuropsychological approaches.
“Dr. Amy Belfi has continued to have a huge impact, on both her field of study and on her students in the classroom, since the day she joined S&T,” says Dr. Clair Reynolds Kueny, chair and associate professor of psychological science at Missouri S&T. “Her hard work helps shine a highlight on the department as a whole, and she is always working to improve the reputation of the university through her research.”
In the past two years, Belfi has been named a Fellow of the Psychonomic Society and earned its Early Career Award. She also earned the Mentorship and Early Career awards from the Society for Music Perception and Cognition and was named a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.
Belfi was also recently named a Kummer Impact Professor at S&T. In this new role, she will support her first student in S&T’s new applied psychology Ph.D. program and begin studies to investigate the neural correlates of music-evoked memories in younger and older adults to improve memory functioning as people age.
Belfi earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from St. Olaf College and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Iowa. She joined Missouri S&T in 2017 from New York University, where she served as a postdoctoral associate.
