90 researchers affiliated with S&T among top 2% cited scientists in their fields

A total of 90 current and former researchers affiliated with Missouri S&T are among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists recognized either for their career-long impact or for their 2024 metrics, according to a Stanford University analysis of the Elsevier Data Repository.

For career-long impact, 74 Missouri S&T researchers were included in the Stanford listing. For 2024, 60 S&T-affiliated scholars were recognized for their single-year citation impact. Of those on the list, 55 are current employees, and one is a current Ph.D. student.

“Missouri S&T continues to have a remarkable concentration of world-class researchers,” says Dr. Kamal Khayat, S&T’s vice chancellor for research and innovation. “Think of it this way — only two out of every 100 researchers worldwide make the cut for this list, but at S&T, about 15% of our faculty are included. That’s an extraordinary proportion and a powerful reflection of the strength and impact of our research community.”

The Stanford study, published Sept. 19, analyzes citations, h-index and other standardized indicators of research productivity and impact and combines them into a composite score, or c-score. Researchers are grouped into 22 broad scientific fields and 174 subfields.

Selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists worldwide ranked by their c-score — calculated both with and without self-citations — or those within the top 2% of their subfield. Separate rankings are provided for career-long impact as of 2024 and for single-year performance based on that year’s citations.

Those in the top 2% with an S&T affiliation include 21 Curators’ Distinguished Professors, seven research center directors, two Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professors, four fellows of the National Academy of Inventors, three fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and one member of the National Academy of Engineering.

S&T researchers included in the study are as follows, listed under academic department. “Career” denotes those recognized for their career-long impact in their fields, “2024” denotes those recognized for their single-year research productivity for 2024, and “both” denotes individuals recognized for both their career-long impact and research productivity for 2024.
