Missouri University of Science and Technology received the 2025 Excellence in Mental Health and Well-Being Award from Insight Into Academia magazine, announced today (Monday, Aug.4).

Missouri S&T will be featured, along with 70 other recipients, in the September 2025 issue of Insight Into Academia magazine.

The Excellence in Mental Health and Well-Being Award is a measure of an institution’s individual programs and initiatives that significantly advance student inclusion and belonging through programs and initiatives.

“At Missouri S&T, we are committed to shifting our culture to one in which all individuals recognize the role they play in supporting overall student well-being,” says Jessica Gargus, assistant vice chancellor of student health and well-being at Missouri S&T. “We know this shift is critical not only to achieving our ambitious retention and graduation rate goals, but also because promoting and supporting well-being for our students, staff, and faculty is both the right and necessary thing to do.”

The university provides holistic support to students through on-campus resources including counseling, crisis response and peer mentoring. Students have access to a goal-setting app to encourage healthy habits, a 24/7 peer-to-peer mental health support platform, and a chatbot to raise awareness of campus resources. Faculty and staff are encouraged to get involved; each university employee receives a mental health crisis response guide in order to be better prepared to assist students in accessing assistance.

“This fall, we are launching a new committee, the Health and Well-Being Collective,” says Gargus. “This is based on the collective impact framework and is designed to advance the holistic well-being of the entire Missouri S&T community.”

“We know that institutions are not always recognized for their dedication to their mental health and well-being services and support for their students and employees,” says Lenore Pearlstein, owner and publisher of Insight Into Academia magazine. “We are proud to honor these colleges and universities as role models for other institutions of higher education.”
