Missouri S&T commencement speakers announced

More than 1,000 Missouri S&T students will be awarded degrees during three upcoming commencement ceremonies Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16. Dr. Terry Brewer, founder and executive chair of Brewer Science, Inc., will speak at the May 15 ceremony for Ph.D. and master’s degree graduates. Jon M. Gibbs, senior president of ExxonMobil Global Operations, will speak at both May 16 ceremonies for bachelor’s degree candidates.

All three ceremonies will be held at the Gale Bullman Building, located at 10th Street and Bishop Avenue in Rolla. The first ceremony, for Ph.D. and master’s degree graduates, will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, May 15. The other two ceremonies, for bachelor’s degree recipients, will begin at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, May 16. Saturday’s ceremonies are divided by discipline.

Each event will be livestreamed via Missouri S&T’s Facebook page and on Zoom for those guests needing closed captioning. The videos will also be on S&T’s YouTube channel. For more details about commencement ceremonies, please visit commencement.mst.edu.

Dr. Terry Brewer founded Brewer Science in 1981, pioneering innovative materials that transformed microelectronics manufacturing, including the first commercially successful antireflective coatings.

Under his leadership, the company has grown into a global technology innovator recognized for both its advanced materials and its people‑centric culture. Brewer has authored numerous publications, holds multiple patents, and has championed programs that foster creativity, continual learning and community engagement.

Reflecting his long‑standing belief in employee empowerment, he gifted one third of Brewer Science to its employees; the company is now Certified Employee‑Owned. Brewer earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of North Texas.

Jon M. Gibbs

Since joining ExxonMobil in 1993, Jon M. Gibbs has held a wide range of operational and executive roles across the United States, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific, guiding complex organizations and large-scale initiatives across diverse markets.

His career has included extended leadership assignments in Nigeria, Angola and Indonesia, as well as responsibility for regional development efforts spanning Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. He has led global service and project organizations supporting enterprise-wide capabilities and the delivery of major projects from concept through start-up. In January 2026, he assumed responsibility for overseeing the company’s operations around the world.

Gibbs holds a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering from Missouri S&T. He is deeply committed to community engagement, serving as an executive sponsor for philanthropic initiatives supporting Houston-area nonprofits.
