For the second year in a row, Missouri S&T’s student section of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) has been recognized as the winner of the national organization’s Samuel J. Glasstone award.
According to the ANS website, this award is presented annually to the student section that “accomplished the most notable achievements in public service and the advancement of nuclear engineering.”
For 2024, Missouri S&T tied for the first-place accolades with Penn State University.
“It feels so rewarding to receive this honor again,” says Sydney Wagner, S&T’s section president and a senior from Bailey, Colorado. “Our officers put in a lot of work and spent a lot of time planning events over the past year, and much of the credit should also go to our general body of members because they really showed up for us, helped with events and remained active with the group.”
This year’s win follows a trend of S&T’s student section continuing to improve in recent years. Before their back-to-back wins this year and last, the group won third place in 2022 and received an honorable mention listing in 2020.
For 2024, Wagner says Missouri S&T’s student section held several team-building and educational events for their members. They also organized events for Nuclear Science Week and participated in various outreach efforts for the campus community, the public and other organizations. They provided tours of the Missouri S&T Nuclear Reactor as well.
Missouri S&T is home to Missouri’s only bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degree programs in nuclear engineering.
