Dr. Klaus Woelk, associate professor of chemistry at Missouri S&T, has been named associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education at S&T. The appointment begins July 1.
Woelk takes over the position from Dr. Shannon Fogg, who has served as interim associate dean since July 2019. Fogg will return to her faculty position at the university as professor and chair of history and political science.
“I would like to thank Dr. Shannon Fogg for her impressive service to the college and am excited to have Dr. Klaus Woelk join us in this position,” says Dr. Mehrzad Boroujerdi, vice provost and dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education (CASE) at S&T. “Klaus is seriously dedicated to the cause of students success, and I look forward to working with him closely in pursuit of our foremost goal of properly educating the future generations of artists, scientists and thinkers.”
Woelk joined the Missouri S&T faculty in 2003 and has served as interim chair of the chemistry department. In 2011, he won the inaugural University of Missouri System President’s Award for Innovative Teaching for his unique approaches to redesigning large enrollment courses with technology-supported active learning strategies.
“It is an honor to be selected to serve the college and lend my support to our great students at S&T,” says Woelk. “I look forward to working more with Dr. Boroujerdi, our other associate dean Dr. Yue-Wern Huang, and all the excellent faculty and staff in CASE. My goals here at S&T have not changed – I want to support our students in any way I can and always be an advocate for their success.”
Woelk earned bachelor of science, master of science and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry from the University of Bonn in Germany in 1984, 1988 and 1991, respectively. His research specializations include physical chemistry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and bio-based liquid fuel properties.
