Dr. Keng Siau, chair and professor of business and information technology at Missouri S&T, has received three awards from the Association for Information Systems (AIS) in recognition of his contributions to the field of information systems. Across nearly 100 countries, the more than 4,800-member AIS serves society through the advancement of knowledge and promotion of excellence in the practice and study of information systems worldwide.
“In Missouri S&T’s STEM-focused environment, our programs emphasize management through technology, with a primary educational emphasis on applying advanced information technology to enhance business competitiveness,” says Siau. “My 25-plus years of participation in AIS has been an invaluable resource for my teaching, research and leadership development. The knowledge I’ve gained from the AIS conferences and journals has helped me become a better teacher and advance student success.”
Siau’s awards include:
- AIS Award for Outstanding Contribution to IS Education is an annual award to only one faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to information systems pedagogy, including competency in subject matter, curriculum development, new teaching methods, ability to inspire students’ independent and original thinking, guidance of research projects, and in student advisement.
- AIS Sandra Slaughter Service Award recognizes five to six longstanding members annually who have provided leadership and service within the association through activities such as involvement in conferences and service in council positions, association committees and on journal editorial boards.
- AIS Distinguished Member Program, Cum Laude designation recognizes 50 members who have made a significant impact on the association. The additional cum laude designation recognizes those who have held continuous membership for at least 10 years, served in a leadership role in the organization, and have been published in at least four publications in an AIS or AIS-affiliated journal.
Siau was ranked as one of the top 60 management information systems researchers in the world in a 2019 study by the University of Arizona, based on the productivity and impact of his published work. He has written over 300 academic publications and, according to Google Scholar, has over 12,000 citation counts. He is also editor-in-chief of the Journal of Database Management and served as North America regional editor for Requirements Engineering journal from 2010 to 2016. He served as the AIS vice president of education from 2011 to 2014.
“Dr. Siau’s research is changing the field of information systems,” says Dr. Kate Drowne, interim vice provost and dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Business and professor of English and technical communication. “His peers recognize him as one of the world’s top IS researchers, and his expertise is frequently sought by industry leaders, editorial boards and colleagues across the globe. He has also demonstrated sustained leadership in innovative education strategies and in serving his discipline through his professional associations. Missouri S&T’s business and information technology department has flourished under his leadership, and we are fortunate to have him as a colleague.”
