Dr. Richard K. Brow, Curators’ Professor of materials science and engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, was recently named president of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) for 2012-2013.

ACerS is the professional society for ceramic engineers and includes more than 9,500 members worldwide. The society’s mission is “to advance the study, understanding and use of ceramics and related materials for the benefit of members and society.”

Brow is also a senior investigator with Missouri S&T’s Graduate Center for Materials Research and a member of the Center for Bone and Tissue Repair and Regeneration. He joined the Missouri S&T faculty in 1998 as a professor of ceramic engineering. Previously, he served on the technical staff in the ceramic development division of Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., from 1985 to 1997.

Brow served as chair of the materials science and engineering department from 2001-2007. He was named curators’ professor in 2004.

Brow has published more than 170 research papers on the properties, structures and applications of glasses, and has received 11 U.S. patents for specialty glasses used in a variety of packaging applications. Named an ACerS fellow in 1995, he received the society’s 2004 George W. Morrey Award for his research on the structures, properties and applications of phosphate glasses.

Brow was named ACerS president during the society’s 114th annual meeting held in October in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Also during the meeting, Colin Ryan, a senior in ceramic engineering at Missouri S&T, received the Alfred R. Cooper Award for research from the society’s Glass and Optical Materials Division and the S&T student chapter of Keramos, the national honor society for ceramic engineers, was named chapter of the year.
