The University of Missouri-Rolla Jazz Band and UMR Jazz Combo will perform in concert Friday, May 4, to mark the end of the current semester. The performance begins at 8 p.m. in Leach Theatre of Castleman Hall, 10th and Main streets, Rolla.
Admission is free for UMR students and $3 for the general public. Tickets are available at the door and at the Leach Theatre Box Office.
“The students have worked hard all semester to be able to show a variety of styles from both the standard literature and contemporary writing,” says Derek Limback, director of the jazz groups. “It should be a fun concert.”
The UMR Jazz Band will perform “Moanin’” by Charles Mingus, “Just a Closer Walk” arranged by Dean Sorenson, “Autumn Leaves” arranged by Peter Blair and “Nutville” by Horace Silver. The ensemble will also perform “Song for my Fasja,” a piece written by Silver and arranged by Limback.
The UMR Jazz Combo’s performance will include “All of Me,” “They can’t Take that Away From Me” and “In Your Own Sweet Way,” as well as three pieces written by Limback: “Some Things May Never Change,” “South Florence Samba” and “Scotch Tape.”
The objective of the jazz music course is to provide a performance lab environment in the classroom, where the theoretical and technical aspects of jazz music are explored.
