The University of Missouri-Rolla Jazz Band and UMR Jazz Combo will perform in concert Friday, May 5, to mark the end of the current semester. The performance begins at 8 p.m. in Leach Theatre of Castleman Hall, 10th and Main streets, Rolla.

Admission is free for UMR students and $3 for the general public. Tickets are available at the door and at the Leach Theatre Box Office.

“It will be a night of exciting music ranging from jazz standards, such as ‘Isfahan’ by Duke Ellington, to contemporary music, such as ‘Haitian Fight Song’ by Charles Mingus,” says Derek Limback, director of the UMR Jazz Band.

Other works the group will perform include “Switch in Time,” by Sammy Nestico, “Doxy,” by Sonny Rollins, “Hunting Wabbits,” by Gordon Goodwin, and “Jalapeno Dreams,” by Dennis Deblazio.

The UMR Jazz Combo will perform at intermission, playing original music and arrangements by the performers.

The objective of the jazz music course is to provide a performance lab environment in the classroom, where the theoretical and technical aspects of jazz music are explored.
