Eleven civil engineering alumni of the University of Missouri-Rolla and the university’s chancellor were inducted into the UMR Academy of Civil Engineers during the academy’s induction ceremony held April 21 in the Kummer Atrium of the Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Building on the UMR campus.
The academy honors civil engineers for their contributions to the profession, leadership and involvement with UMR. The academy also serves as an advisory group to the UMR civil engineering department.
New members are:
- Dr. John F. Carney III of Rolla, Mo., UMR chancellor. Carney received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Merrimack College and master’s and doctoral degrees in civil engineering from Northwestern University. A 40-year veteran of higher education and a civil engineer by training, Carney became chancellor of UMR in September 2005.
- David Diestelkamp of St. Louis, director of business development for the Midwest region at Jacobs Engineering Co. Diestelkamp received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from UMR in 1977 and immediately began working for Sverdrup in St. Louis.
- Mark Harms of Belleville, Ill., president of SCI Engineering Inc. Harms received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from UMR in 1983 and 1985, respectively.
- Barry Hayden of Ladue, Mo., board chair of Hayden Homes Inc. Hayden received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from UMR in 1965.
- David B. Lewis of Carrollton, Texas, partner of Blade Energy Partners. Lewis received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from UMR in 1978 and 1980, respectively.
- Dr. Charles G. Lyons of Springfield, Mo., retired from Exxon Mobil Corp. Lyons received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from MSM, now UMR, in 1964 and later earned a master’s degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M.
- Gilbert R. McKean of St. Louis, retired president and chief executive officer of Breckenridge Material Co. McKean received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from UMR in 1962.
- David Muenks of Orlando, Fla., senior vice president and chief executive officer of Ginn Development International. Muenks receives a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from UMR in 1976.
- Robert M. Saxer of St. Charles, Ill., partner and sales manager at AMCEC Inc. Saxer received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from MSM, now UMR, in 1961 and 1962, respectively.
- Graham G. Sutherland of Pelham, Ala., manager of estimating and construction of BE&K Engineering and Construction Co. Sutherland received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from UMR in 1964 and 1965, respectively.
- Douglas W. Wesselschmidt of Shawnee, Kan., city engineer for Shawnee, Kan. Wesselschmidt received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from UMR in 1983 and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Kansas.
- Thomas E. Whitecotton of Rolla, Mo., retired Army major general. Whitecotton received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from MSM, now UMR, in 1962. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from UMR in 1970 and 1971, respectively.
