High school juniors and seniors from around the country can get a behind-the-scenes look at the manufacture and application of metallic and ceramic materials in a free summer camp to be held this summer at the University of Missouri-Rolla.

The camp will be held July 24-29 on the UMR campus. Sponsored by the UMR department of materials science and engineering with ASM International, the professional society for materials engineers, the five-day camp will include demonstrations, presentations and hands-on projects. Under the guidance of experts, campers will learn to use state-of-the-art research equipment in an engineering laboratory.

Housing, meals and tuition for the camp are provided for no cost, but only 30 students will be selected to attend the camp.

To be selected, students must send a completed application, a school transcript, an essay of 100 words or more on why they want to learn about engineering and materials science, and a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher or counselor to Dr. Ron Kohser, professor of materials science and engineering at UMR, 223 McNutt Hall, Rolla, Mo., 65401. Applications are due by Tuesday, May 31.

Online applications are available from ASM International.
