S&T announces Undergraduate Research Conference winners

The winners of the 13th annual Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri University of Science and Technology have been announced. The conference, which was held in April on the S&T campus, featured oral and poster exhibitions that represented work from students in nearly every major at Missouri S&T. Winners were awarded a cash prize of $750. Second- and third-place finishers received $500 and $250, respectively.

Missouri S&T students to study in Iceland

Students enrolled in two different English courses at Missouri University of Science and Technology will learn about Icelandic myth, folklore and literature this summer in Reykjavik, Iceland, as part of the “Heroes of Fire and Ice: A Three-Week Study Abroad” experience. The program, which runs May 29-June 17, will count for six credit hours. “Heroes of Fire and Ice” will examine how Iceland’s culture has been shaped by a landscape of natural extremes.

Geotechnical engineering expert to present first Prakash Lecture at S&T

Dr. Richard D. Woods, a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, will present the inaugural lecture in the Shamsher and Sally Prakash Distinguished Lecture Series in Geotechnical Engineering.

The lecture, titled “Geotechnical Impact of High Energy Construction Operations on Nearby Infrastructure,” will be held at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, May 18, in Room 125 Butler-Carlton Hall. It is free and open to the public.

Researchers create shape-memory aerogels with rubber-like elasticity

Polymeric aerogels are nanoporous structures that combine some of the most desirable characteristics of materials such as flexibility and mechanical strength. It is nearly impossible to improve on a substance considered the final frontier in lightweight materials. But chemists from Missouri University of Science and Technology have done just that by making aerogels that have rubber-like elasticity and can “remember” their original shapes.

Missouri S&T Concrete Conference canceled, reset for June 6-7

Due to major road closures leading into and out of Rolla as well as statewide flooding, Missouri University of Science and Technology has canceled the 2017 Concrete Conference, originally scheduled for May 2-3 on the Missouri S&T campus. The conference has been rescheduled for Tuesday, June 6, and Wednesday, June 7. Current participants will remain registered and expected for the June dates. An updated schedule of events will be available at concrete.mst.edu.
