Missouri S&T researcher included in $10 million biopharma research investment
The National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL) recently announced it would provide funding for a Missouri S&T researcher’s biopharmaceutical manufacturing project. The S&T project is one of 14 sharing $10 million for research in technology, workforce development and global health.

Missouri S&T researchers develop faster, cleaner, less expensive chemical reaction process
A process developed by researchers at Missouri S&T could lead to cleaner, less expensive and more efficient production of pharmaceuticals, biomass fuels and other products that are made through chemical reactions. The research project is the first time the combined reaction-separation process has been performed without the use of metals or solvents. The research was published and highlighted with cover art in the journal Reaction Chemistry and Engineering, a publication of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Venerable vanguard of S&T chemistry to present Stoffer Lecture Oct. 8
Dr. William J. James, professor emeritus of chemistry, will share personal memories and compelling highlights of his 65-year academic career at Missouri S&T for the third annual Dr. James O. Stoffer Lecture to be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, in Room G-3 Schrenk Hall on the S&T campus. The lecture is free and open to the public. Following the lecture, a reception honoring James will be held in the commons area on the third floor of Schrenk Hall.

Missouri S&T biochemical engineer patents low-cost method of removing bacterial toxins from fluids
By some estimates, 18 million people die each year from sepsis triggered by endotoxins – fragments of the outer membranes of bacteria. A biochemical engineer at Missouri S&T has patented a method of removing these harmful elements from water and also from pharmaceutical formulations. Her goal: improve drug safety and increase access to clean drinking water in the developing world.
The technique, as outlined in a July 2016 article in the journal Nanotechnology, involves a one-step phase separation method, using a syringe pump, to synthesize the nanoparticles. Those polymer nanoparticles have a high endotoxin removal efficiency of nearly 1 million endotoxin units per milliliter of water, using only a few micrograms of the material.
