Missouri University of Science and Technology’s arts, languages, and philosophy department will present their choir concert, “Our Favorite Songs,” this May.

The performance will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 1, in Leach Theatre of Castleman Hall, located at the corner of 10th and Main Street on the Missouri S&T campus. The choir will be directed by Lorie L. Francis, teaching professor of music at Missouri S&T.

A special program performed every six years by the Missouri S&T Choir, “Our Favorite Songs” is a selection of choral pieces chosen by choir members. “This makes for an interesting program, a bit of a smorgasbord of music styles,” says Francis.

The opening piece, “Let the Music Fill Your Soul,” with music written by Jacob Narverud and text by Robert Bode, is an invitation to the concert. “The text invites our audience to literally let the music fill your soul as the evening’s concert goes on,” says Francis.

The program also includes pieces familiar to those who enjoy musicals and movie theme songs: “Seasons of Love,” from RENT, “A Million Dreams,” from The Greatest Showman, a medley from The Phantom of the Opera, and “What It Sounds Like,” from KPop Demon Hunters.

Rounding out the program are “Salmo 150,” a setting of Psalm 150 by Ernani Aguiar, “There Was a Time,” by Elain Hagenberg, “Come in From the Firefly Darkness,” by Amy F. Bernon, and “Earth Song” by Frank Tichelli.  The program will end with a PINKZEBRA composition, “Kaleidoscope.”

“It’s always fun to do these concerts. Many of these pieces were not performed by the S&T choirs; these were perhaps a favorite from high school or a piece they’d heard they’d like to sing and I always look forward to what songs they come up with!” says Francis.

Tickets are $5 for the public and free to youth, ages 18 and under, and Missouri S&T students with a valid ID. Tickets can be purchased 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday from the Leach Theatre Box Office, located inside the main entrance to Castleman Hall, facing 10th Street. Tickets can also be purchased at the door starting an hour before the event, online at leachtheatre.mst.edu, or by calling 573-341-4219. Service fees may apply to tickets purchased online.
