The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has named Jacob Hauck, a Ph.D. student in computational and applied mathematics at Missouri S&T, as a recipient of the 2025 DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Award.

Hauck, of St. Louis, is the first Missouri S&T mathematics and statistics graduate student to earn the award.

According to the SCGSR website, the honor provides selected students with pathways to advance thesis research while working at a DOE national laboratory, collaborate with world-class scientists and use state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge scientific instrumentation.

Hauck is currently an intern in the Data Analysis and Machine Learning Group at DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the award will allow him to continue his doctoral research at the facility.

A Kummer Innovation and Entrepreneurship Doctoral Fellow at S&T, Hauck’s research focuses on learning surrogate models for nonlocal mechanics problems. He has also published research on scientific machine learning related to improving the accuracy of methods to solve multifidelity and multiresolution problems.

His research advisor is Dr. Yanzhi Zhang, the Gary Havener Endowed Professor of mathematics and statistics at S&T.

Hauck is a recipient of S&T’s 2025 Paul W. Eloe Graduate Research Award at S&T. Before beginning his S&T program, he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
