Missouri S&T’s teams were among the top finishers at the 47th International Collegiate Mining Competition, with one of the men’s teams placing fourth in its division, the women’s team taking fifth, and the co-ed team earning sixth. Another S&T men’s team finished 14th overall.

The competition took place in March at the King Edward Mine Museum in Cornwall, England, and featured collegiate mining teams from universities across the United States, England, Australia, Canada and Germany. Institutions could field multiple teams across men’s, women’s, co-ed and alumni divisions.

The international mining competition requires students to complete old-fashioned mining techniques in timed events. These techniques are typically known as “mucking.” The different areas for the competition include jackleg drilling, track standing, hand mucking, hand steeling, gold panning, surveying and Swede sawing.

Missouri S&T’s women’s team and top men’s team both earned the highest scores for gold panning, with the men’s team also being the world’s best in jackleg drilling.
