Terry Brewer, founder and executive chair of Brewer Science Inc., delivers the May 2026 commencement address for master's degree and Ph.D. candidates.

Dr. Terry Brewer, founder and executive chair of Brewer Science Inc., spoke at the May 15 ceremony for Ph.D. and master’s degree graduates. Dr. Terry Brewer founded Brewer Science in 1981, pioneering innovative materials that transformed microelectronics manufacturing, including the first commercially successful antireflective coatings.

Dr. Terry Brewer, founder and executive chair of Brewer Science Inc., discussed the various paths graduates will take during their careers and emphasized the importance of failure on the path to success as part of Missouri University of Science and Technology’s commencement ceremony for master’s degree and Ph.D. graduates. The event was held Friday, May 15, at the Gale Bullman Building on the S&T campus. More than 1,000 degrees were awarded during S&T’s three commencement ceremonies.

“You all deserve congratulations,” Brewer told the graduates. “You’ve all achieved something far beyond the ordinary, and you’ve accumulated all kinds of successes along the way. You’ve taken a giant step. You’ve designed your own parachute. You’ve built your own parachute. And now it’s time to jump.

“Wherever you land, there are great paths to take. You’ve been prepared, you’re going to land on your feet, and you’re going to hit that path running,” Brewer said.

“There’s a lot of bad paths you could also follow, but don’t be too concerned about it. Sometimes following the bad path is the greatest thing that could ever happen to you,” he said. “That may be the path of success. So, if you find a bad path, just pick up the pieces and move on.

“It’s not unreasonable to say that most success comes out of failure,” he said. “So, fail a lot. Don’t be afraid of failure. Success is often found along those paths of failure.”
