The Nuclear Frontier premiered at the Kennedy Center in 2025.

Missouri S&T will host a free screening of The Nuclear Frontier, a documentary focused on the future of nuclear energy, 5-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, in the Innovation Lab Forum on the S&T campus.

“Reliable, carbon-free energy is critical to both economic growth and national security, and deploying nuclear at fleet-scale will be essential for this,” says Drew J. Barringhaus, a senior in nuclear engineering at S&T. “This approach focuses on building standardized reactors in a repeatable way to reduce costs and speed up construction. During an internship this past summer, I was able to see these ideas in practice, which inspired me to bring this film to campus and share that perspective.”

Barringhaus’ internship was with Southern Nuclear, where he worked at Plant Vogtle Units 3 and 4 — the nation’s two newest commercial nuclear reactors — which were built using a standardized design that could be repeated across multiple plants.

The Nuclear Frontier premiered at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., in 2025 and explores efforts to expand nuclear power in the United States as energy demand continues to grow. Some of its key topics include energy security, the role of nuclear power in providing reliable, carbon-free electricity, and the policy and industry challenges involved in scaling new reactor technologies.

The free event, which will be hosted by Missouri S&T’s Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Department, will include a panel discussion with industry experts and a reception following the film.

Very Interesting subject. Is there any way you could “stream” this presentation, Zoom the meeting, or possibly after the presentation post it to a website? Thanks. Larry S. EE ‘69 (And EE Academy)
