As the biotechnology sector continues to rapidly expand, biochemistry graduates are increasingly in demand. Their expertise is needed in industries ranging from pharmaceuticals and agricultural biotechnology to health care and environmental conservation. To meet this growing demand, Missouri S&T plans to offer a new degree in biochemistry.

The University of Missouri Board of Curators approved Missouri S&T’s proposal to create the new bachelor of science degree during the board meeting today (Thursday, April 16). The degree proposals will now go before the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education for approval.

“A degree in biochemistry from Missouri S&T not only provides a deep understanding of the fundamental mechanisms governing life but also equips students with versatile skills in research, critical thinking and data analysis,” says Dr. Mehrzad Boroujerdi, vice provost and dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education at S&T. “These abilities are essential for addressing some of the most pressing challenges in medicine, environmental science and biotechnology.”

The proposed degree will draw on Missouri S&T’s expertise in biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics.

The interdisciplinary nature of S&T’s biochemistry degree will work to address workforce demands by providing graduating students with a foundation in enzyme chemistry, metabolism, and data analysis, preparing students to solve data-driven problems and adapt to future changes.

“This degree is designed to prepare students for careers in the biotechnology, chemical, or biomedical industries – or for graduate and professional education,” says Boroujerdi. “Additionally, being at Missouri S&T, students will be immersed in an entrepreneurial environment and are encouraged to take electives such as the BioDesign and Innovation course, further enhancing their ability to translate scientific knowledge into real-world applications.”

S&T’s curriculum will align with recommendations from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), from which the program will also seek accreditation. The curriculum for the biochemistry laboratory work is being developed by Dr. Pablo Sobrado, the Richard K. Vitek/FCR Endowed Chair of Biochemistry in the chemistry department at Missouri S&T. He will incorporate materials from his research to offer experiential learning opportunities to students in the laboratory.
