Ralph Grant, a 1993 chemical engineering alumnus of Missouri S&T and member of the university’s Academy of Chemical and Biochemical Engineers, has been honored with University Police’s Lifesaving Award.

At a ceremony today (Monday, May 27), Chief Doug Roberts presented the award to Grant in recognition of his quick actions during an academy event in April when another member of the academy lost his footing and struck his shin, which caused profuse bleeding.

Roberts says Grant recognized the person’s bleeding was extensive, and he removed his belt and used it as a tourniquet to slow blood loss.

“His efforts to apply a tourniquet to the injured person prevented a desperate situation from escalating, and he likely saved his fellow academy member’s life,” Roberts said during the ceremony. “This helped substantially slow the bleeding down and kept this person stable until the police, fire and EMS responded to the scene, provided advanced treatment and transported him for treatment.”

After being treated for his wound and receiving stitches, the injured academy member was released from the hospital.
