From robotics to rockets, movies to history or biology to mining — Missouri S&T has a summer camp for any interest, and registration is open now. There are 29 camps for K-12 students to choose from this year, including six new camps.
Courtney Jones, director of the Kummer Center for STEM Education, says one of the exciting additions this year is a camp named “CASE: Apocalypse — Building a New Tomorrow.” Campers will navigate a fictional “apocalyptic” scenario while exploring departments in S&T’s College of Arts, Sciences, and Education (CASE). For the history buffs, there’s a new World War II reenactment summer camp.
“We are super excited about providing an opportunity for students to really dive into history,” Jones says. “There are a lot of people who don’t realize how great our history department is.”
Roxanne Hanna, associate director of the Kummer Center for STEM Education, says that through S&T’s summer camps, children can engage in their specific interests while discovering new ones.
“Getting to see kids dive into their interest areas while seeing them start to lay plans for their futures is so rewarding,” Hanna says. “We have all heard the term STEM, but it often becomes an umbrella term, so youth might not fully know how it could play a role in their future.”
It’s also important to note, Hanna says, that S&T offers a variety of camps, such as a movie makers camp and an eSports camp.
STEM-related camps include topics such as biology, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, mining, robotics, explosives, space, computer science and even amusement park design. Jones said giving kids the chance to discover these topics while learning from professionals directly can help them ignite their own passions and curiosity.
“Knowledge is huge,” Jones says. “I didn’t know an engineer growing up, so we can give kids an opportunity to learn about engineering from a real expert, and they become excited about it. That could lead to a potentially very fulfilling, successful career in the future.”
Register for camps, learn about camp scholarships and get parent information at summer.mst.edu. In addition to the camps, the STEM Center plans to offer other learning opportunities for children during the summer. Details will be announced in January.
