Dr. Mehdi Ferdowsi, a professor of electrical engineering at Missouri S&T, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
“Being elevated to the status of Fellow makes me feel happy, humbled and accomplished,” he says. “It is an honor to be acknowledged by my peers for my contributions to our field.”
The IEEE Fellow Committee noted that Ferdowsi was selected due to his contributions to both high-gain converters for renewable energy applications and battery management systems.
IEEE has over 460,000 members around the globe and is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology. Less than 0.1% of its voting members are selected annually as Fellows.
Ferdowsi joined Missouri S&T in 2004 as a member of the electrical and computer engineering faculty. In 2023, he was named associate dean for research for S&T’s College of Engineering and Computing, as well as S&T’s Schlumberger Endowed Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
From 2020-2022, Ferdowsi served as a program director for the National Science Foundation’s Division of Engineering Education and Centers. He was awarded the foundation’s Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award in 2007 for his work related to energy storage units for hybrid vehicles.
Some of Ferdowsi’s research interests include renewable energy resources, power electronics, electrification of the transportation industry, wide bandgap devices and microgrids, and he is an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics publication.
Ferdowsi holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He earned his master’s degree in electrical engineering from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran, and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tehran.
